14 April 2015 Wesley Mission news

Housing and accommodation Wesley Youth Accommodation Coffs Harbour is sponsoring Coffs Harbour’s very own REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival as yet another way to help homeless youth.

Team leader at the centre Meena Johnson, a Coffs Coast resident of 16 years, said the busy service looks after young local people who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca Heads.

“Wesley Youth Accommodation Coffs Harbour is about giving young people skills and options for their future,” she said. “The REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival is also about providing young people with skills, direction and a voice and so we are really excited to be involved.”

How Wesley Youth Accommodation Coffs Harbour helps young people
CEO of Wesley Mission the Rev Dr Keith Garner said this year the service will assist more than 100 homeless young people to rapidly find stable accommodation. It will also reach out to over 200 other young people to resolve issues such as family conflict that may cause them to become homeless in the future.

“Many young people struggling on Youth Allowance, cannot afford rent and do not have a rental history,” Dr Garner said. “This means they are often forced into unsuitable share accommodation.

“We provide safe alternatives for young people who have run out of any good options for accommodation and who are dealing with real crises.”

What is the REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival?
The REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival will allow young people around the Coffs Coast region to tell their unique stories, provide them with technical filmmaking skills, and be recognised for their talents in their local communities.

The festival culminates in a free pop-up cinema screening at Brelsford Park on Friday 17 April as the region’s main event for National Youth Week. It is sponsored and presented by Screenwave, Headspace, Wesley Mission, BCU, Southern Phone, and Coffs Harbour City Council and Coffs Harbour City Council

Short film finalists will be screened on the night. The showing is free and begins at 7 pm. Bring a blanket, camping chair, and a picnic dinner for a great night out. REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival is a drug and alcohol-free event.
