Why Ian is braving Tough Mudder

Ian Ferguson mostly fundraises for Wesley Mission from his desk. Ian is our Executive Manager–Fundraising. But on Saturday 16 November, he will exchange his office for five kilometres of mud and obstacles that he will confront along with the other members of our Wesley Mission team of ‘heroes for homelessness’.

Ian has signed up for the Tough Mudder Sydney 5K event in Glenworth Valley, just north of Sydney, to help raise $5,000 for our homeless services. If you’d like to, you can support Ian’s efforts now at his fundraising page.

This won’t be Ian’s first time undertaking a physical and mental challenge for the people we help. He also runs in the annual City2Surf 14km fun run for Wesley Mission and will also participate in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival on 15 September.

“That sense someone in need is relying on you, that’s what gets you there and through the day,” Ian says.

“It’s also exhilarating to be part of the crowd with your friends and family, doing something for others. And you don’t have to be any more fit than a regular person gets from being on the move all day.”

Ian encourages anyone who is thinking about doing the Tough Mudder Sydney 5K for Wesley Mission to jump in and give it a go.

“It’s a chance to do something you wouldn’t ordinarily, and push yourself outside your comfort zone–and by getting some sponsorships while you do it, people in great need will benefit,” he says.

“I’ve seen the difference made by Wesley Edward Eagar Centre, our homeless shelter at Surry Hills. I know that every cent that people can raise is another toiletries kit, another night of accommodation, or another encounter where staff go above and beyond for someone. Being part of that is just a great feeling.”
