We believe people with disability should have every opportunity to live meaningful lives. That’s why we’re building two specialised homes for young people, aged 12 to 18 in foster care, who live with complex disabilities.
A partnership between Wesley Dalmar and Wesley Disability Services, Wesley Intensive Therapeutic Care, Significant Disabilities is opening two homes in Carlingford to give eight young people, who currently live in hospital or respite care and cannot live with their birth families, a place to call home.
“Living in hospital is not a long-term solution. We’re providing them with a homely permanent option, so they don’t have to stay in hospital wards and can live in a house that’s built around their needs,” Ray said, Wesley Disability Services Program Manager.
The purpose-built homes will facilitate their complex needs ranging from autism, vision impairment, hearing impairment, those dependent on wheelchairs for mobility and young people faced with challenging behavioural needs.
Each young person will have their own bedroom, styled to their personal taste. Every home is fitted with a lounge room for recreational activities and a communal space designed for sensory activities, including a bubble wall. Each home has an open plan kitchen, two large bathrooms, an office, laundry, sleeping quarters for overnight staff, vehicles with two-wheelchair capacity and a car port.
“It’s going to be a warm, homely environment where they can engage in meaningful activities,” Ray said.
No matter the need, we’re here to walk alongside young people with disability to reach their milestones. These homes will support them as they journey towards more independence and develop life skills to help them thrive.
Construction of homes are underway and are expected to open in August 2020.
