Falling on 21-27 May this year, the annual celebration appreciates the generosity and hard work of Australia’s six million volunteers. Focused around the idea of ‘Give a little, change a lot’, the theme represents how, every day, people are changing lives in their communities through donating a little of their precious time. In acknowledgement of this, National Volunteer Week hosts thousands of events across the nation, including picnics, awards ceremonies, training sessions and more.

Taking the time to honour the efforts of volunteers is particularly close to our heart. Here at Wesley Mission we simply wouldn’t be able to sustain all of the supportive work we do without the help of such dedicated people. Volunteers are a crucial part of the work we do for those most in need, and have clocked up more than 133, 816 hours of service per year in the past– that’s the equivalent of having an extra 67 people work full time!

"Volunteering makes me feel very fulfilled knowing that I am helping others to make a difference in their lives". – Robyn, Volunteer

Volunteering can be defined as “time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain”. This accounts for a myriad of things at Wesley Mission, each of which is critical to bringing more services to more vulnerable people. Volunteering opportunities range from youth mentors to senior tutors, bus drivers to retail assistants, and more. There are options for everyone, whether that’s on an individual basis, with colleagues or friends—every generous soul can play a part in making the world a better place.

For some people volunteering is a chance to show compassion and give back to society; for others it’s to meet new people and broaden their horizons. Whatever drives you, it’s sure to be both a challenging and rewarding experience. Research shows donating time doesn’t just help those in need; it’s beneficial to the wellbeing of the person who gives back as well.
