The Rev Dr Keith Garner looks at the conversation between Jesus and the Canaanite woman in the Gospel of Matthew who asks for her daughter to be healed. The woman is an outsider in the Jewish society in which Jesus lives. Just as Jesus’ words to her are challenging, the story itself was a challenge for the early Christian movement as it discerned whether or not to reach out to the Gentiles. In the same way the story calls us to cross social boundaries in order to connect with those considered outsiders by our own society.
