As the Rev Dr Keith Garner explores Jesus’ ‘cleansing’ of the temple, we gain insight into the zeal and anger of Jesus Christ, and the question of ‘just whose church is it?’ A closer look reveals that Jesus’ anger, though dramatic and forceful, was God-centred and therefore properly focused, directed at the spiritual corruption and abuse of the marginalised. Identifying the temple as ‘his Father’s house’, Jesus gave a powerful reminder that our congregations are not private domains but God’s domain. As we continue this Lenten season of prayer, fasting and giving to others, we are reminded through this passage that God’s grace and love is available to all.
