Confidence and self-esteem

It’s common to suffer from low self-esteem at some point in your life. It can be caused by a number of things—comparing yourself to your friends, problems with family or at school or your health. Sometimes it passes on its own or you can take steps to help yourself feel better.

Tackling low self-esteem early can help prevent depression or anxiety developing.Our youth centres offer short term programs where you can learn more about developing positive self-esteem and good mental health. You can also get access to counselling and other forms of support.

If you’re in Newcastle, you may also be able to access our Young Healthy Minds program. The program helps young people (up to 18 years of age) who show the early signs of, or are at risk of developing, mental illness. We tailor our services to meet the needs of young person so they can build the skills and confidence they need to achieve their goals.

In addition to the services we offer through our youth programs, you may also find the following websites useful for their information about mental health:

  • Smiling Mind – mindfulness meditation resources, with programs specifically for 13 to 15-year-olds and 16 to 18-year-olds
  • Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation and provides mental health services for young people aged 12- 25.
