Giving young people a chance

Edition 3, 2023

Idyllic ‘Treehouse Farm’ in Northern NSW is a place abundant in avocadoes, macadamias and custard apples. But they’re not the only things that grow – young people in foster care thrive here too, as part of a collaboration between Wesley Mission and foster parents, Lisa and Gary.

“When COVID hit in 2020, it was the right time for a change, so we left Sydney’s Northern Beaches for Ballina,” says Gary. “We ended up looking at much larger properties that had a lot of merits, so we could consider fostering on a larger scale.”

With Wesley Mission expanding the Wesley KickStart program, the 25-acre Treehouse Farm became the perfect place to help young people develop practical life skills and soon everything fell into place.

“We’re just mum and dad. We saw a huge difference between the lives of our biological children and the kids we were supporting in crisis care, and we had to do something,” Gary continues.

Wesley KickStart is an innovative program supporting young people to transition from foster care to independence at their own pace.

Supported by Wesley Dalmar case managers, foster parents care for up to four young people at a time, as they gain confidence, develop living skills, look for employment opportunities or further study.

Passionate about supporting young people who’ve experienced breakdown in their foster placement, Lisa says becoming foster carers is the best decision she and Gary have ever made.

“We’ve both had very successful professional careers, and we’ve travelled the world, but being foster parents is the best thing we’ve ever done,” she continues. “I don’t understand why more people don’t do it.”

Celebrating NAIDOC Week from Coffs Harbour to Cronulla

Connection to culture is an integral aspect of the care we provide at Wesley Dalmar. For our foster families it’s an opportunity to engage with the children and young people in their care. And for our children and young people, it’s a simple way to share their heritage and values.

That’s why we were so honoured to have participated in so many incredible NAIDOC Week celebrations from Coffs Harbour to Cronulla, and everywhere in between.

We started the week at the Youth Off The Streets Inner West Youth Homelessness Service Cultural Camp before visiting UNSW for its NAIDOC Week celebrations, showcasing the incredible talent and knowledge of the local Indigenous community.

On Gumbaynggirr land, we witnessed a NAIDOC Week flag raising ceremony and attended the Aboriginal Housing Forum and NAIDOC Lunch and the Who Ya Gonna Call Forum in support of Wesley Youth Accommodation Service. We enjoyed the Gumbaynggirr NAIDOC Concert in Urunga before heading inland to Bowraville for a local family fun day.

On Dharag land we joined celebrations at Kimberwalli, an Aboriginal centre for excellence, then travelled southeast to Gweagal land for a smoking and flag raising ceremony.

We ended the week back on Dharag land for the NAIDOC River Walk and more community celebrations.

It was wonderful to be part of so many expressions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, the longest continuous culture on Earth. Check out the image gallery for event highlights.

Team profile

Team member name: Lynette Linfoot

Title:  Clinical Manager

Program or Department or team: Sydney Clinical Services, OOHC

We provide therapeutic services for children and young people, and their carers, in Out of Home Care (OOHC), including assessment, therapy and counselling, behaviour support and group work.

We’ve successfully run five therapeutic camps since 2017, and we’re about to launch our sixth. This initiative allows children and young people to meet with others who share similar experiences of being in care and continue these relationships beyond camp. It also introduces them to therapy and helps them understand themes such as relationships, safety, communication, anger and anxiety. Being cared for in a safe and fun camp environment while also undertaking all the usual outdoor education activities has paved the way for these children and young people to receive further therapeutic intervention after camp.

Seeing the resilience that children and young people in OOHC have and sharing the journey with them as they grow from their past trauma experiences and develop skills they can take into adulthood.
