Training for students

Our Crisis Supporter Workplace Training will help you build the necessary skills to become a volunteer Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland Telephone Crisis Supporter.

You’ll participate in weekly modules including online learning followed by face-to-face learning. Refer to our training calendars for dates and class schedules.

Units of competency

Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland on behalf of Lifeline Australia RTO 88036, complies with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTO).

Lifeline’s Crisis Supporter Workplace Training offers a nationally recognised qualification in the following three units of competency:

  • CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide
  • CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • CHCCCS028 Provide client-centred support to people in crisis.

Annual accreditation requirements 

To maintain your accreditation as a volunteer Crisis Supporter, it’s important you must:

  • have a minimum 92 logged in hours on the phone
  • have a minimum eight hours of professional development per year
  • participate in regular supervision and call coaching
  • undergo a Criminal Record Check every two years using Lifeline and Wesley Mission’s providers
  • hold a valid Working with Children Check.

Costs and eligibility

The course fee is $1,200 (no GST). This is a subsidised fee and is non-refundable.

To be eligible, you must:

  • be over the age of 18
  • be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or have permanent resident status
  • live within the Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland catchment area
  • provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination
  • provide a valid Working with Children Check number with your application (and renewal after expiry)
  • consent to a National Criminal Record Check using Fit2Work and First Advantage platforms, with a renewal required every 2 years.

Our catchment area is within the boundaries of the southside of the Sydney Harbour Bridge down to Engadine out to Menai, Revesby, Strathfield and Concord.


Training requirements

You’re expected to actively engage in the training process. You’ll need to:

  • attend all training sessions and complete all e-learning modules
  • demonstrate punctuality and reliability
  • participate fully in all training activities
  • respect the rights and opinions of others
  • ensure that your actions and behaviour model the expectations outlined in Wesley Mission’s and Lifeline’s Code of Ethics, policies, procedures, and standards
  • seek support regarding any aspect of the training as needed.

If you successfully complete our Crisis Supporter Workplace Training, you’ll receive a statement of attainment.

What is the Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland CSWT Fast-track Program?

Through our CSWT Fast-track Program you can complete our Crisis Supporter Workplace Training program in less than six months.

The Lifeline Sydney & Sutherland CSWT Fast-track Program provides the same credentials in a shorter period of time, all while supporting our community. Our face-to-face intensive learning workshops are completed via three-hour daily sessions and over three weeks, instead of weekly over three months.
